Music

I’m a musician best known for my interdisciplinary collaborations and entrepreneurship. I’m dedicated to making classical music — especially contemporary classical — thrive with younger audiences. I am the founder of Telling Stories, a radio program on public radio that features classical chamber music and original essays.

Telling Stories has grown to host interdisciplinary education programs at the Denver School of the Arts.

Orchestral experience: I’ve performed with the Colorado Ballet, Colorado Music Festival, Colorado Springs Philharmonic, Fort Collins Symphony, Boulder Philharmonic, and Greeley Philharmonic, as well as the Mercury Ensemble and the Colorado Chamber Music.

Chamber music experience: I’ve performed with Telling Stories, Mountain Chamber Music Society, Suonare, Boulder Brass, and Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra.

Recital repertoire: I’m currently working on recital repertoire to perform with Dr. Scott Turpen in February of 2012; we will be performing David Maslanka’s Song Book and Akira Yuyama’s Divertimento for Marimba and Alto Saxophone, among other selections. Recent other recital repertoire includes Robert Cronin’s Postcard, Michael Colgrass’s Hammer and Bow, Francis Poulenc’s Napoli (arranged by Chris Jusell), Christian’s Woehr’s Djembach, and Barbara White’s When the Smoke Clears.

Education: I received my Bachelor’s in Music at Drake University, studying with Robert Meunier, and my Master’s in Music at the University of Colorado-Boulder, studying with Dr. Douglas Walter.

Marimba music

Michi by Keiko Abe

Kembang Suling by Gareth Farr, movement 1.

’81 by Joanna Newsom, arranged by Chris Jusell

A Little Prayer by Evelyn Glennie, arranged by Barry Kardon and Jennie Dorris

Music in nontraditional spaces: When I first started Telling Stories, I was passionate about taking classical music out of the concert hall. Here are two of the performances from our first year, when we were in the wonderful Laughing Goat Coffeehouse in Boulder. Every time we played pianissimo, the milk steamer would take its cue.
