Jennie Dorris is a dynamic percussionist that thrives on the musical gamut – from solo performances to small collaborative recitals to large orchestral concerts. Through each of these performances she brings a spark of unique music-making – whether it's working with a composer, attracting a unique audience, or collaborating with other artistic disciplines – to both the business of creating a concert and the performance itself.
Jennie is currently an extra percussionist with the Colorado Music Festival and the Boulder Philharmonic. She is a section percussionist with the Longmont Symphony and is the principal timpanist with the Timberline Symphony.
Jennie teaches winter percussion at Wheatridge High School, and also is an ensemble and private instructor at Arvada West High School.
Jennie earned her undergraduate degree in music from Drake University, where she won the Drake University Concerto Competition in 2001 and was ranked fourth nationally by the Music Teachers National Association in 2001.
Jennie completed her graduate work at the University of Colorado-Boulder, studying with Doug Walter. She was awarded a performance fellowship and then became a teaching assistant where she was the Percussion Methods instructor, conductor of Percussion Ensemble and also taught private lessons.
Recently Jennie combined her talents of writing (link to journalism bio) and music in a concert series called the Rockstar Readings (link to Rockstar Readings page) at the Boulder International Youth Hostel. Jennie was the founder of this innovative series that brought together fresh essays from twentysomething writers with solo classical marimba works.
